Buyers Embrace Modular Mansions
Some industry estimates say home construction is down 70 percent since 2006. And as people wanting new homes search for cheaper alternatives, many are ignoring long-held social stigmas about modular homes. “There used to be some stigma with modular homes,” said John Ela, owner of Epoch Homes in Pembroke. “People would mistake them for mobile homes.” Ela says the modular home industry has suffered less than traditional home construction companies due to cost-effectiveness and expediency. ...Unlike years ago, modular homes are not all cookiecutter. These days, many home buyers work with builders, sometimes architects, to design the perfect modular home. "(Modular) used to mean you’d have a trade-off," Ela said. "You just had to pick one plan out of a small list. Now, the sky’s the limit." (read more)

A variety of Modular Solutions to Building Green

He argues that this approach is more effective at introducing green building to the mainstream market than the practice of offering specific green home models or features.
According to Ela, many firms making green modular housing offer only a few models with several customizable options. “Homeowners want more options than that,” he says. (read more)

The Newest Thing in Sustainability is the 'PowerPod' Modular
Pembroke-based Epoch Homes is taking the meaning of "going green" to a whole new level.
President and CEO John Ela said while other construction companies are talking about initiatives to make their projects more environmentally friendly and sustainable, Epoch is actually doing it.
"Epoch is on the cutting edge," said Ela, who bought the company over two years ago and since then has made it a goal to stay on the forefront of green construction. "There's 1,000 different definitions for what that means and what I mean by green is whatever the builders want it to mean. We can build whatever shade of green you want."(read more)
